Terms of Service
These terms are the agreement between you and Selfshot when you use selfshot.net and the Selfshot app. We wrote them to be read, not skimmed past. If something is unclear, ask us.
1. Who we are
Selfshot is operated by Selfshot ("Selfshot", "we", "us"), email hello@selfshot.net. By creating an account, uploading footage, licensing footage or subscribing to Selfshot Pro, you agree to these terms, our License Terms, our Privacy Policy and our Refund Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Selfshot.
2. Who can use Selfshot
- You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live if that is higher.
- You must give us accurate information and keep it up to date.
- One person, one account. You are responsible for everything done with your login, so keep your password private.
- If you use Selfshot for a company or news outlet, you confirm you have authority to bind that organization to these terms.
3. What Selfshot does
Selfshot is a marketplace. Creators list footage they filmed. Buyers pay to license that footage. Selfshot hosts the clips, shows watermarked previews, runs checkout and pays creators their share. The footage belongs to the creator, and the license a buyer receives comes from the creator through Selfshot.
4. Uploading footage
You must own it
Only upload footage you filmed yourself, or footage you hold all rights to license. When you upload, you confirm that you own the copyright, that the footage is real and not misleadingly edited, and that licensing it will not break any law, contract or anyone else's rights.
Real footage only
Selfshot only lists real camera footage. Footage made or changed with AI (generated scenes, swapped faces, synthetic voices, or AI edits that change what happened) is not allowed, even if it's labelled. Our checks flag clips that may be AI made and hold them for a person to review before they go live. Accounts that upload AI footage as real will be closed. You also can't list someone else's footage: scenes from movies, TV shows, music videos or games, broadcasts, recordings of a screen, or videos downloaded from other apps. Our checks refuse these, and repeat attempts close the account.
People on camera
If anyone can be identified in a clip, you must mark it. Either ask each identifiable person to sign the Selfshot release on their phone, upload a signed release from each of them that allows editorial and commercial use, or list the clip as editorial use only, which limits buyers to news, documentary and similar editorial work. Until everyone asked has signed, a clip sells for editorial use only. If you offer someone a share, that percent of your earnings from every sale of the clip is held by Selfshot and paid to them, for as long as the clip sells. Editorial use only clips must be filmed somewhere you were allowed to film, never in a private place. Do not upload footage that identifies a minor unless you have a release signed by their parent or guardian.
What you give Selfshot
You keep ownership of your footage. You give Selfshot a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free right to store your clips, create thumbnails, storyboards and watermarked previews, show them on Selfshot and in our marketing, and grant licenses to buyers under the License Terms at the price you set. You can remove a clip at any time. Removing it stops new sales but does not cancel licenses already sold.
That includes every kind of license Selfshot sells, on every plan: an editorial license for one project; a commercial license at three times your editorial price; the same clip for another project from the buyer's studio at half price; and, for Selfshot Business members, a license at the list price that covers every project their team makes. On all of them you receive 60% of the price paid. You can also let Pro and Business members ask you for an interview, casting or research. That's your choice, it's off until you turn it on, and your contact details are only shared with someone if you accept their request.
Exclusive licenses
Unless you switch it off for a clip, a buyer can license a clip exclusively for 30 days before anyone else has licensed it, at four times your price, and you get your share of that. During those 30 days you agree not to post, sell or license the clip anywhere else, and you can't remove it from Selfshot. If you break an exclusive, we can recover the extra amount from your earnings and close your account.
Moral rights
Under Canada's Copyright Act you keep moral rights in your footage, including the right to be associated with it and the right to its integrity. To the extent the law allows, you waive those rights in favour of Selfshot and every licensee, for the uses the License Terms allow, such as editing, cropping and reframing your clip. This waiver does not stop a licensee from crediting you, and it does not allow uses the License Terms forbid.
Not allowed
- Footage you didn't film or don't have rights to, including clips downloaded from social media or the news.
- Sexual content or nudity, or anything that sexualizes or exploits a minor. Uploads that may involve a minor are reported to the authorities as the law requires.
- Graphic footage filmed or posted to shock, glorify or mock suffering, including cruelty to people or animals.
- Footage recorded illegally, such as hidden camera recordings in private places.
- Content that is staged, altered or generated and presented as a real event.
- Content that promotes violence, harassment or hate, or that exposes private information about someone.
Trending and Clip of the Month
Every clip that goes live in a calendar month enters that month's Trending automatically. There is nothing to buy and nothing to sign up for. Accounts at least 7 days old can like clips and vote, one vote per account per matchup per day. The 16 most liked clips on the 11th go into a bracket, and the community's votes decide each round; Selfshot does not pick the winner. The champion is announced on the 1st of the next month, is featured on the home page, and wins the prize shown on the Trending page, paid to the creator's payout account. We may disqualify clips or votes that break these terms, including votes from duplicate or fake accounts, and pick the next eligible clip instead. Graphic clips aren't eligible. Where local law limits contests like this, the prize may be withheld or replaced with a featured spot. While Selfshot is in testing, no cash prize is paid.
Graphic content
Real news footage is sometimes hard to watch: war, serious accidents, injuries, death and violence. You can list it for news, documentary and education. When you upload it, tick “This clip shows graphic content”. Selfshot's check looks for it too. Graphic clips are reviewed by a person before they go live, are licensed for editorial use only, are blurred until a viewer chooses to see them, and are never shown on the home page or to people who aren't signed in. We may decline graphic footage that identifies people who died or were badly hurt, out of respect for them and their families. Not marking graphic footage, or marking it to avoid review, breaks these terms.
5. Pricing and payouts
Selfshot suggests a price for each clip using a published formula. It combines the clip's resolution, frame rate, length, orientation and image quality with an AI appraisal of what it shows: how rare it is, its news value, how few people could have filmed it, its impact, and how recent it is. The suggestion is an estimate, not a valuation or a promise of sales. You choose the final price within the range shown.
Every clip has an editorial price and, unless it is editorial use only, a commercial price three times higher (see the License Terms). Prices above $400, clips rated rare, and clips our checks flag (for example possible screen recordings or footage that isn't original) are reviewed by Selfshot before the higher price or offers switch on, or before the clip goes live. We may keep a clip at a standard price or remove it after review. On rare clips you can let buyers make offers; nothing sells unless you accept and the buyer pays, and the same 60% share applies to the agreed price.
On every sale, the creator receives 60% of the listed license price and Selfshot keeps 40% as its platform fee. A Selfshot Business license is sold at the listed price and covers every project the team makes. Payouts are handled by Stripe Connect, and you must complete Stripe's onboarding and accept the Stripe Connected Account Agreement to be paid. You are responsible for reporting your earnings and paying your own taxes. If a sale is refunded or charged back, your share of that sale is reversed.
6. Captured on Selfshot
Clips recorded in the Selfshot camera carry a "Selfshot Capture" badge. It means the clip was recorded inside the app, and the recording time and device were logged and signed by our server. It does not mean Selfshot has checked what the footage shows, who is in it or what happened. Buyers remain responsible for their own verification.
7. Buying a license
When you license a clip you get the rights described in the License Terms, and nothing more. Each license covers the one project you name at checkout, or every project on a Selfshot Business plan. Prices are in US dollars. The full amount you will pay, including any sales tax that applies, is shown at checkout before you confirm, and you can cancel or correct your order before you pay. Payments are processed by Stripe. Selfshot does not store your card details. Your receipt is emailed to the address you give at checkout.
8. Selfshot Pro and Business
Selfshot Pro is a paid subscription for research and casting, for producers, researchers, casting teams, journalists, content creators and editors, billed monthly or yearly. Selfshot Business is a paid subscription for organizations: it includes Pro for the account owner and up to four teammates the owner adds, and licenses bought by those five people cover every project they make. Both renew automatically at the price shown when you subscribed until you cancel. You can cancel any time from Manage billing on the Pro or Business page, or by emailing us. The account owner is responsible for who they add to a Business team and can remove teammates at any time. Pro lets you search for creators who have opted in to casting and research requests and send them a request explaining who you are and why you want to reach them.
- Creators decide every request. Their contact details are shared only after they accept, and only the method they chose.
- Use a creator's contact details only for the purpose stated in your request. Do not share them, sell them or add them to a list.
- No harassment, pressure or repeated requests after a decline.
- We may suspend Pro or Business access without refund if these rules are broken.
Keeping deals on Selfshot. If you find a creator or their footage through Selfshot, you agree to license that creator's footage only through Selfshot for 24 months after you first viewed their clip or contacted them here. Creators agree not to sell footage listed on Selfshot to a buyer they met here outside Selfshot during the same period. Messages, offers, profiles and listings can't include phone numbers, email addresses, links, social handles or offers to pay outside Selfshot. We block these automatically and keep a record of each attempt. If a deal covered by this section is completed outside Selfshot, we may close the accounts involved, and the buyer and creator together owe Selfshot the fee it would have earned on that sale. Footage bought outside Selfshot is not covered by a Selfshot license certificate, release check or verification.
9. Uploading clips
Selfshot only opens the clips you pick or drop in. Quality and the file's own details are read on your device, and location data is removed before upload. To suggest titles and tags, three small still frames may be sent to our AI provider. When you open a clip to publish it, six larger frames are sent to appraise it, check that it's real camera footage and suggest a price. A clip the check flags is held for a person at Selfshot, who decides whether it can be listed; you can dispute the check and explain how you filmed it. Nothing is uploaded until you press Publish or Send to Selfshot. The details are in our Privacy Policy.
10. Takedowns and disputes
If you believe footage on Selfshot infringes your copyright or shows you without consent, email hello@selfshot.net with the clip link, your contact details and an explanation of your claim. We review every notice, may remove the clip while we look into it, and will tell the creator. Where Canada's Copyright Act requires it, we forward a notice of claimed infringement to the creator and keep the records the Act requires. Accounts that repeatedly upload footage they don't own will be closed.
11. Suspension and closing your account
You can close your account at any time by emailing us. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms, put other users at risk or expose Selfshot to legal harm. Earnings already cleared will still be paid out unless they came from a breach of these terms. Licenses already sold stay valid.
12. Disclaimers
Selfshot is provided as it is and as available. We work hard to keep it running and secure, but we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error free. Footage is supplied by creators, and we do not guarantee its accuracy, newsworthiness or fitness for a particular purpose beyond what the License Terms state.
13. Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, Selfshot is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost profits, revenue or data. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid or earned through Selfshot in the 12 months before the claim, or CAD $100. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that cannot be waived.
14. Indemnity
If you upload footage you had no right to upload, or use a license in a way the License Terms don't allow, you agree to cover the reasonable costs, damages and legal fees Selfshot faces because of it.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute will be heard in the courts of Ontario, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.
16. Changes
We may update these terms as Selfshot grows. If a change is significant we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Selfshot after that means you accept the new terms.
